Semantic Analysis

Yesterday, I was trying to remember the URL of this site, a now-defunct webcomic about dwarf policewoman from Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series of novels.

Now, at first, I was greatly amused by this link in the search results. Pipl.com calls itself the “most comprehensive people search on the web”, and it’s obvious that the whole thing is done without much human intervention. In short, they’re relying at least a little bit on semantic analysis to figure out just what string of characters represents a “person”. Obviously, as in this case, they have difficulty recognizing fictional characters for what they are. Hey, no problem, it’s an immature technology, and better to be inclusive than exclusive, right? It’s not as if a bunch of automatically-generated webpages really cost the company much, if anything, to provide, right?
