There’s Search and Seizure, and Then…

…there’s search and seizure, new-world-order style. In a nutshell, the U.S. asserts the right to examine laptops, external hard drives, cell phones, and any other electronic device being brought through the border for, well… it’s not very clear just what they’re looking for, really.

It’s interesting that there seems to be a double standard at work – to fly domestically, or leaving the country, all you generally have to demonstrate is that your electronic device is what it looks like, and not, say, a bomb, or a hiding place for drugs. Coming into the country, however, is another matter entirely – especially if you’re from the Middle East or Southeast Asia.

There are ways to get around this invasive examination, of course – methods likely already being used by anyone with something to hide. This, frankly, begs the question of just what the government hopes to find from these sorts of searches…
