Nu-clear Terra

A new post over at the Homeland Security Digital Library weblog points to a new report on securing the bombthe bomb, as in nuclear – under the fear-inducing title “Nuclear Threat Just a Bomb Away, According to New Report.”

While this is certainly nothing new – the “nuclear threat” is, and has long been, “just a bomb away” – I am, at least, pleased to see that the report, from the Nuclear Threat Initiative, manages to abstain from some of the politically-convenient and completely baseless fearmongering certain other nonproliferation parties engage in. It may waffle a bit in a few places, and accepts unchallenged a number of unverifiable government claims, but it’s generally well-sourced, and refrains, as far as I can tell, from making stuff up, which is always a good sign.

Reaching Out To – and Recruiting – Today’s Youth

About four months ago, I wrote about the burdens facing recruiters trying to entice the youth of today into military service. If the outlook seemed bleak then, a newer presentation from the Navy (8MB PowerPoint file) identifies, in the best tradition of military analysts the world over, a number of unsettling problems and trends, yet presents no meaningful ideas on how to solve them.

Dead Birds are SO Useful

Following on from yesterday’s Army poster about stupid helicopter pilots, here’s another, part of a safety campaign to teach pilots to watch out for trees. Yes, trees; apparently helicopter-tree contact are a surprisingly common phenomenon – at least, in those parts of the world where they have trees.
