Unsecured Wi-Fi Hotspots as Security Threat

Every once in a while, you hear or read stories about drive-by spammers, scum-sucking turdlets who exploit open wireless networks to send bulk email without consequence; it’s just one of many possible ways an unsecured wifi access point can be used for nefarious purposes, when all is said and done.

The use of cellphones as triggers for explosive devices is fairly well-established, but I have to wonder if anyone has ever considered the dangerous combination of VOIP and unsecured wifi hotspots in this context.

The Illusion of Security

An interesting report on not-quite high-security locks, as demonstrated at DefCon this year. Most people are surprised at just easily a common padlock can be bypassed (even I can pick a Master padlock without too much difficulty), and even more, I imagine, will be surprised to discover that some “high security” locks aren’t a whole lot better.

It’s a moot point, really. People attack weak security points, whatever they might be. You don’t pick the lock on a gate whose fence you can easily climb over; you don’t pick a door lock when you can jimmy a window lock instead, or enter through an unlocked loading-dock door. A determined adversary isn’t going to be stopped just because you put shiny, expensive locks on your door…
