Kurt Waldheim

Kurt Waldheim, former Secretary General of the United Nations and one-time President of Austria, passed away last month, at the ripe old age of 88. He had an interesting political career, to say the least, one not untainted by scandal and controversy. I (and doubtless others) had hoped to be able to shed some light on one of those controversies, but it apparently wasn’t meant to be.

The Economic Costs of Sophistication

The forces of progress aren’t always what they’re cracked up to be, and sophistication isn’t always a good thing. At least, that seems to be the case where grocery shopping is concerned. A premium for a “brand name”, sure, but who knew there was a 7% markup to defray advertising expenses?
