Around the year 2000, the Marine Corps, Defense Threat Reduction Agency, and others examined the creation of a “Multi-Sensory Distraction Device” with an outfit called SARA. An ambitious problem seemingly plagued by lack of focus and direction, I’m unable to find any signs that it ever went anywhere or did anything other than die a slow, whimpering death.

In an era when it seems like the music of nearly every classic rock band from the ’60s and ’70s has been turned into a musical, it’s worth remembering that musicals, once upon a time, included original music - and I’m not just talking about “rock operas” like Tommy, either.

One of the worst musicals of the 1980s - the cold-war parable Chess - managed, thanks in no small part to the involvement of half of Abba, to produce one piece of original music that fared rather better than the musical itself. I refer, of course, to One Night in Bangkok, originally performed by Murray Head in his role as “The American” in Chess.

It seems like not a week goes by that some website is posting a list of some quantity of “hot” women; sometimes not just women, but actresses or supermodels or some other exclusive (as opposed to inclusive) demographic. It’s actually really entertaining to view this, from a sociological standpoint, because these sorts of lists always piss people off to no end.
