Dirty, Happy People?

A BBC article on a Neuroscience report by researchers at Bristol University touches on an interesting idea – that the brain’s “happy chemical”, seratonin, is produced in response to benign bacteria commonly found in dirt.

It’s an interesting idea, if only in that it suggests what many others have been saying for decades, about how it’s hard to find happiness in the sterile, manmade environment of a big city. Might getting back to nature be a viable route to happiness after all, and not just a cliched catchphrase? I’m not a neurologist, so I can’t really say.
