I don’t give much credence to the superstitious symbolism, good or bad, that some people attach to certain numbers. 7, 11, 13, 23, 69, 88… they’re just numbers. Sometimes they’re used by people to mean certain things (as is the case with “88”), but there’s nothing inherently meaningful, I think, about any given number. It’s just… meaningless superstition.

Others disagree.

I happen to live in a neighborhood with a number of small ma-and-pa grocery/convenience stores, and do my part to support these small businesses when I can. In between the every-seven-to-ten-days “real” grocery shopping, I’ll pick up various goods at one of these stores.

What do my shopping habits have to do with numerology? Just wait.

Over the past week, I went to one market four times. The first time, I bought a couple of sodas, a bag of chips, and a few other things, and the total wound up being – with tax – $6.66. The clerk shook her head and muttered something like “bad number” when it happened, and I thought nothing more of it… until a day or two later, when I was back, buying some different things – which also added up to $6.66, after tax. And again, a day or two after that, a third assortment of snacks and groceries, which totaled exactly $6.66. “Wow, that keeps happening to you,” the clerk commented, “must be bad luck, huh?” I just kind of shrugged, and didn’t really think anything of it.

But then, two days ago, I was back, picking up snacks for Sunday afternoon for my roommates and I. A couple bottles of soda, two bags of chips, some candy… the clerk smiled happily as the total on the cash register hit seven-something, and kept ringing up stuff. “No unlucky number for you today,” she said, smiling. I smiled too, albeit briefly. The total, with tax? Thirteen dollars and thirty-four cents… and all I had on me was a twenty.

Yep, my change was $6.66. I think I need to shop elsewhere for a while, if only to stop alarming the young lady at that grocery store. I don’t think there’s anything meaningful about that number… but I have to wonder if the universe is trying to tell me something?

This continues to happen to me, too…I actually came across your post while searching for anyone else who may have had this happen. Pretty weird! 🙂
