More Censorship, Sorta
A little over a month ago, I reported that the Marine Corps is blocking access from the TOR network of anonymous onion-routers, hoping that people would get sufficiently outraged to raise a stink.
They didn’t. But that’s okay.
In what is probably another futile effort at raising public awareness, I learned, and was able to confirm for myself, that USSOCOM’s website evidently simply doesn’t respond to requests from outside the U.S. If anything, I’d think this is a bigger deal than “just” blocking a public network of anonymous users - from IP addresses in the UK, Germany, Holland, and Hong Kong, the SOCOM website is simply unavailable, while simultaneously loading just fine for stateside users.
Mind you, theirs is a pretty fluff-filled website, and foreigners aren’t missing out on much - except perhaps the fact-filled 2007-2008 desk planner - but that isn’t really the point. There is no doubt an explanation, but I strongly doubt it holds water. If you don’t want “them” seeing what’s on your website, guys, don’t put it online in the first place. Sheesh…
