Fast Food, Army Style

This month, the Department of Defense rolled out the Unitized Group Ration - Express, the latest new form of food for today’s ravenous warfighters.

Designed to provide one meal for eighteen people, the completely self-contained ration supposedly “like a cook prepared meal” doesn’t necessarily live up to the “express” part of its name, taking half an hour to forty-five minutes to prepare. (Hey, it contains about twenty pounds of food.) Instructions for operating one are available here, if you’re so inclined, and the magnesium-and-saline heater system looks like it was thought up at MIT.

One fun aspect of the new meal is a side-effect of that very heater system - while cooking, the system produces about eleven cubic feet of hydrogen gas, which is of course flammable. While some will be excited that you no longer need to wait until after dinner to light fart flares, some geeks are already looking at ways to harness that gas for good.
