The State of Homeland Security, 2007
A quite critical report was issued without much fanfare last month by Congress’ Majority Staff of the Committee on Homeland Security, detailing in no uncertain terms the shortcomings of the Department of horrible Homeland Security. Entitled “The State of Homeland Security 2007″, the report (78pp, 1.5MB PDF) not only examines seventeen critical performance areas, but also grades the Department on them, and it looks like DHS might need some summer school classes, or at least tutoring, to get with the program:

And if you think that looks nasty, check out this quote, from the first paragraph of the executive summary: “Despite the valiant efforts of the employees at the Department, there are troubling signs that the Department leadership is critically challenged with regard to executing the basics of strategic planning and organizational planning, financial management, integration, and coordination.”
As far as I can tell, this quite damning, if mildly partisan, report received little attention at all outside of government when it was quietly released last month. If you thought the Department of Justice under Alberto Gonzales was the only part of our federal government suffering under the incompetence of today’s politically-motivated administration, this little report could be quite the eye-opener.
