It’s Funny…

It’s funny how just a few days ago people were being really cautious and painfully positive when talking about St. Paul’s most recent trio of homicides, those of the fiancee and a child of one Otahl Saunders, as well as “Telly” himself. “[T]hese people weren’t dope dealers,” said one Deon Hunters. “Police have declined to discuss whether there was anything in the victims’ backgrounds that might have led them to be targeted,” reads a Star Tribune article. Speaking of the fiancee, Maria McLay, a friend opined “She wasn’t mixed up in that crap - crime, drugs, ghetto living.”

Alas, it looks as though her fiancee was, what with an outstanding warrant for possession of 56 grams of cocaine, and a pretty checkered criminal past. Suddenly the always-unemployed “sponge” who liked to hang around with children doesn’t seem like such a great guy. Amid repeated comments that the perpetrators likely knew the victims, and the reported involvement in the investigation of the much-overworked Gang Strike Force, a clearer picture is beginning to emerge of the victims, days after the fact.

Yes, it’s tragic, and senseless; the daughter’s death most of all. But, come one, can we all not trip over ourselves in a rush to see who can make an unemployed, convicted criminal with outstanding warrants and a history of drug use and dealing seem most like a great, all-American guy?
