Intruders and Heart Attacks

My home office is at the back of the building, looking out on the back yard. Depending on which desk I’m sitting at, I’m either sort of facing the windows, or have my back to them. Just now, I was sitting with my back to the window. There’s nobody else here, save the kitties, and I have the radio on.

There was a pounding on the window, about eight feet behind me. Swear to the gods, I must have jumped a foot in the air. I spun around, wondering who was in the backyard, and why, and where the nearest can of pepper spray was. My heart was pounding; someone’d just scared the bejeesus out of me.

Standing in the snow outside the window is a UPS driver, waving a box at me. I point towards the side of the building, where the door is, and he crunches off in that direction. I go to follow him, and, looking out the window, see the big brown UPS truck, parked in the alley behind the lot, thru the open gate in the fence.

I get to the door, and get the package. The driver tells me the street’s blocked off a block or two away because of some construction, so he decided he’d just go down the alley.

I certainly appreciate his going the extra mile, but, dang, I think he just took a year or two off my life expectancy. I’m going to go grab something to eat, and check for new grey hairs in the mirror…
