Continuing Computer Irritation

Every once in a fairly frequent while, I get really irritated by computers. Case in point, Bethesda Softworks’ Oblivion, which supposedly will run on an nVidia FX5500, according to the box it comes in. It just isn’t so. Now, the FX5500 isn’t a terrible card, it’s just not powerful enough to run the ridiculously, stupidly bloated piece of misadvertised software that it Oblivion.

But my partner really, really wanted to play Oblivion, so who am I to argue? Off I go, and buy an ATI Radeon 9600 PRO, a card that’s confirmed to work with Oblivion at decent settings. I was a little hesitant about buying an ATI card; I’ve been an nVidia owner since the days of the GeForce2, and have owned at least five of their video cards over the years.

It turns out, I should have stuck with nVidia. Why? Because it is a little-advertised fact that the Radeon 9600 – in fact, a whole slew of ATI cards – are simply incompatible with motherboards using the VIA KT400 chipset. Guess what chipset my motherboard has?

Right.

Man that pisses me off…
