A Voice of Reason on Iran

Outgoing head of the IAEA, one Mohammed El-Baradei, on the threat of an Iranian Nuclear Apocalypse(TM):

“These people are demonic supervillains bent on nothing less than the nuclear annihilation of everyone and anyone who has the nerve to disagree with them. They are weeks if not days away from launching a large-scale nuclear assault on much of Europe and the Middle East! John McCain was right – we must “bomb, bomb Iran” at once! The future of the free world depends on it!”

Just kidding! 🙂 What he really said, according to the Jerusalem Post, was this:

“In many ways, I think the threat has been hyped,” El-Baradei told the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists… “Yes, there’s concern about Iran’s future intentions and Iran needs to be more transparent with the IAEA and international community,” he said. “But the idea that we’ll wake up tomorrow and Iran will have a nuclear weapon is an idea that isn’t supported by the facts as we have seen them so far.”

Hopefully calmer heads, like El-Baradei, will prevail… but, really, who am I kidding?

I wasn’t a huge fan of El-Baradei, but he’s generally been pretty level-headed about nuclear capabilities and threats. This obviously made him fairly unpopular with hawkish governments – like the United States – and it’s no surprise that his intended replacement as head of the IAEA, Yukiya Amano, is an almost polar opposite in every respect, whose appointment – which begins this November – would have been a dream come true for, say, the Bush administration. How the Obama administration gets on with Amano is another question entirely…
