Follow the Money

Consider for a few moments, if you would, the Hells Angels, the Warlocks, the Outlaws, and all the other outlaw motorcycle gangs throughout North America and elsewhere. Despite infrequent protests otherwise, they’re all involved quite heavily in a wide variety of criminal enterprises – smuggling and distributing drugs, illegal cigarettes, and guns; in some cases even human trafficking and prostitution, to say nothing of the inevitable money-laundering that tries to disguise the origin of their ill-gotten gains.

And, what gains they are! Just in North America, the various “one percenter” biker gangs are evidently moving several million dollars a month. Crime pays, doesn’t it?

Here’s what I can’t quite figure out, though: Where’s the money go? Even the leaders aren’t exactly leading rock-star lifestyles, and the rank-and-file aren’t really wallowing in money. These guys are so very much live-for-the-moment types, I really can’t see them squirreling away several million dollars in offshore accounts for “a rainy day”, you know?

You might think the big question of the way would be “what are the biker gangs doing with their ill-gotten loot?”, but a little bit of digging I’ve done over the last couple days suggests that might actually be the wrong question to ask. Rather, the question might actually be “Are the biker gangs actually making any sort of significant profit from their activities, and if not, why?”

I know it’s kind of heretical to suggest they’re not just in it for the money, but if they’re not obviously enjoying the fruits of their criminal labors, as seems to be the case, then you have to wonder just what it is they are “in it for”. Power and prestige, perhaps?

Even if you believe they’re in it for the money – which I’m far from convinced isn’t the case – where does it all go?
